Setting Up Your First Godot Project
Step-by-step walkthrough of downloading Godot, creating a new project, and understanding the editor interface for beginners.
Read GuideLearn game development from the ground up with open source Godot. Perfect for beginners in Wollongong and beyond.
Godot is completely free and open source. It’s lightweight, powerful, and runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, and the web. Whether you’re building 2D pixel art games or 3D adventures, Godot gives you the tools without the hefty price tag.
We’ve trained over 200 developers since 2022. Most learners complete their first playable game within 8 weeks. The community is active, welcoming, and always ready to help.
You’ll download Godot, explore the editor interface, and understand the node-based architecture. We start simple — no complex theory. By day three you’re making things move on screen.
Introduction to GDScript syntax, variables, and functions. You’ll write your first interactive script and see it work in real time. Most people get excited here because things start responding to their code.
Physics, collision detection, and game state management. You’re building actual game logic now — player movement, enemy AI, scoring systems. The concepts feel more real because you’re creating something playable.
UI design, audio integration, and performance optimization. By week 8 you’ve got a complete game you can share. Some learners export to web or mobile. Most feel genuinely proud of what they’ve built.
Do I need any prior coding experience?
No. We start from zero and assume nothing. If you can use a computer, you can learn Godot. Many of our learners had never coded before.
What do I need to get started?
Just a computer running Windows, Mac, or Linux. Godot itself is free. You don’t need expensive software or hardware. A regular laptop works fine.
Is Godot really free?
Completely. It’s open source, maintained by a global community, and you own everything you make. No hidden costs, no licensing fees.
Can I build both 2D and 3D games?
Yes. Godot handles both equally well. We focus on 2D fundamentals first because they’re easier to grasp, but 3D is absolutely possible once you’re comfortable with the basics.
How long until I can publish a game?
Most learners finish a simple playable game in 6-8 weeks. Publishing to itch.io or similar platforms takes maybe an hour once your game is done. The barrier is way lower than you’d think.
Will I understand the code I’m writing?
That’s the whole point. We don’t teach you to copy-paste. We explain the why behind each line so you actually understand what’s happening and can modify it yourself.
Where can I get help when I’m stuck?
The Godot community is incredibly active. You’ve got the official forums, Discord servers, YouTube tutorials, and our own help center with answers to common problems.
Are the guides kept up to date?
Yes. Godot releases major updates regularly, and we update our materials accordingly. We focus on fundamentals that don’t change, so older lessons stay relevant even as the engine evolves.
